Seagate today announced a large capacity model of its full-disk encryption hard drive series. According to Seagate, the Momentus FDE advances its global push to help secure notebook computer information from theft or loss and helps combat growing threats to mobile information. The self-encrypting notebook PC hard drives now comes with up to 320GB of capacity, with 500GB models coming soon. So how does the system work? Once installed, the user simply enters a BIOS password, then logs on as usual, and the security is in place. The hardware-based encryption engine delivers security without the overhead – no bootup delays, no system slowdowns – and the BIOS automatically authenticates the user for transparent security.
